FOOD FOR IRAQIS FLEEING ISIS

During summer of 2014, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis residing in and around Mosul fled the advance of ISIS. And because of the coalition battle to liberate Mosul and cities in the Nineveh Plain, thousands more Christians, Muslims and Yazidis were internally displaced. Their needs are still overwhelming.

When Iraqis returned home after the defeat of ISIS, many found their cities and villages in shambles. There was little left to return to and few jobs were available. Many remain dependent on the generosity of others for the basic necessities of life, including daily rations of food.

During the crisis, URI in partnership with Kids Against Hunger and Help Iraq,  provided 23,000 rice casserole meals for internally displaced families who fled their homes for Iraqi Kurdistan.

The meals were trucked from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Detroit where they were loaded onto a shipping container. The meals arrived in Erbil, Iraq before Christmas 2017.

When the ISIS crisis began, we partnered with other charities to help provide the needy IDP’s with water, heaters, food, diapers, soap, diapers, milk, towels, beds and blankets.

The crisis is far from over, and many months are likely to pass before these Iraqis can return to some semblance of their previous lives.

With your help, we will continue to do what we can to help them survive until the time comes when they can once again live  productive and peaceful lives.
